The Chapel by the Lake congregation and the Juneau community have moved mountains and our temporary school building is ready for teachers to move in! Over the next two days, teachers will be setting up rooms while the district continues to finalize transportation and meal service.
On Friday, January 21, we’d like to invite you to come see the new space. This open house will be by grade levels in order to adhere to COVID mitigation as well as to give time and attention to each child and family. Everyone must wear a mask over their nose and mouth, regardless of vaccination status. Please be mindful of maintaining space from non-family members while in the building.
Please join us at Chapel by the Lake during one of the following times:
- 2:00-3:00 pm grades Kindergarten and First
- 3:00-4:00 pm grades Second and Third
- 4:00-5:00 pm grades Fourth and Fifth
If you have children in more than one grade, please select one time for you all to visit.
A few important pieces of information:
- Parking is available both in front of and behind the building
- Take it easy on the right-hand turn into the UAS campus off Glacier Highway. It is narrow, and can be slick.
- When leaving and heading back toward town, please turn RIGHT onto Glacier Highway and proceed through the roundabout near DeHarts to return to Glacier Highway heading to town.
Our first day with students will be on Monday, January 24. We will share more information about returning to school in the coming days. We are so excited to see everyone and get back to learning together!

I am pleased to announce that we have a new, temporary school site for the majority of our classrooms. Reverend Doctor Tim Harrison, and the congregation of Chapel by the Lake, have generously opened their building to us while repairs are completed at our school. The Chapel by the Lake building has enough classrooms for almost all of us to be together. There is also a full commercial kitchen and large fellowship hall where we can provide breakfast and lunch to students. Additionally, we will have access to a classroom and the gym at the UAS recreation center
Now that we’ve secured a space, we’ve shifted our focus from packing to planning and coordinating services, such as food and bussing. Our goal is to move into the new space and have students learning in person as soon as possible. Our hope at this time is that we will be able to return to in person school at Chapel by the Lake, before the end of this week. During this transition time we will provide at-home learning activities for your students and will connect with each of you. We will have these available for pick up on Tuesday afternoon; delivery is also possible. Devices will not be distributed to students at this time.
I’ll continue to update you as plans develop. I will also schedule a Riverbend Community zoom meeting this week to share information and answer your questions. Thank you for your ongoing support and patience.

While I don’t have a full report on plans for resuming instruction for our Riverbend students, I want to give you a quick update. A lot of progress has been made in the past 24 hours.
We have been working with other schools and community organizations, and I am confident that we will have enough space to be able to relocate classrooms for in person learning during the construction period. We will not all be able to be in the same place, but we will be able to reunite with our teachers and classmates soon.
There are still many details to be decided, but as we head into the long weekend, rest assured that this extended break will end soon. We are finalizing locations, transportation and meal services. Families and staff will receive another update on Monday, January 17.
Thank you for your patience as we find creative solutions to this unexpected situation.

Riverbend Elementary School was inspected for water damage today following flooding at the school. The district was notified that clean up and repairs will take several weeks. Tomorrow staff members will pack up classrooms to prepare for construction crews. Flooring, carpet and drywall need to be removed and replaced in most of the school.
Plans are underway for alternative methods for instruction, including possible alternative locations. Strategies for food service, materials and device distribution, student learning and after school programs are being developed as quickly as possible.
What we know for sure is that students will not be able to attend school in person at Riverbend Friday, January 14 or Tuesday, January 18. (Monday is a school holiday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.)
An update will be sent out to families and posted on websites on Monday, January 17.
Juneau School District
Thank you CBJ Streets Maintenance!
Following a three day delay in the start of the second semester due to hazardous weather followed by dangerous road, parking lot and sidewalk conditions, students returned to class on Thursday morning. The return went smoothly
The Juneau School District sincerely appreciates the extra effort from the City and Borough of Juneau Streets Maintenance who answered a call for help. Overnight, CBJ crews sanded school parking lots, driveways and access roads. This morning school grounds were significantly improved, allowing students, employees and families safe passage to walk and drive to class. The work of the CBJ Streets Division made a big difference in our successful reopening. THANK YOU!
